Isolation
of an Endless Tomorrow
Kristina Berry ![]() WINNER: BEST IN SHOW, TOP SIX PROPOSALS Juror's Comments: (Selected by juror as Best in Show ) "It uses a lot of Three-dimensional forms." (Selected Best in Show) "This,to me, is the most visually interesting of all the projects. Though technically not a poster, the project engages the viewer in a unique way, adn this is appreciated. What it lacks in concept it makes up for in visual interest." (Selected as Best in Show) "It is the most visually stimulating and thought provoking." “The concept for this piece is isolation. When I think of this word, it reminds me of a forest, how you can walk through one and be totally alone. There are three layers to my piece: the collage, the lone figure, and the painted tree. The collage is of color and black & white images of trees. I collected these photos by walking around the campus and finding interesting trees. The reason why the photos are separated is to draw the eye towards the piece in general and then to the center opening. The lone figure is the key part to the overall composition because it is here that the word comes into play. I have used this figure before in previous compositions of mine, and to me, it symbolizes isolation/solitude perfectly. The figure looks thoughtful yet so very alone. The third layer is a black and white tree. I chose these colors to represent the depression one may feel, which is why people tend to go into isolation. People will become introverted when they feel too overwhelmed, stressed, or angered. They bottle up all these emotions and tend to forget the world that is around them. When this occurs, they have isolated themselves, going into their “forest” to be left alone and figure things out. Even then, there may be an inner conflict because the person may not know what is bothering them or they do not wish to correct the issue. Other times, and in my case, people may feel the need to be isolated from others in order to just sit and think without having the disruption that people tend to cause. I like going into isolation when I feel that I cannot deal with people any more. When I feel this way, I go off on my own, find a nice comfortable space, and read. I can do this for hours without ever noticing how fast time goes by. Sometimes I like to just be left alone, feeling the need to think certain things through and give these thoughts my undivided attention. My piece represents nature and the need to be isolated at points in one’s life. The viewfinder is a way to look into these people and understand that some are this way.” |
