Gentrification in Cabrini Green Melissa Rosa ![]() WINNER: BEST CONCEPT and TOP SIX PROPOSALS Juror's Comment: (Selected by juror as Best Concept and Best in Show ) "Great Concept, hits home w/ a lot of people, lots of hard word, great idea, delivered it well" (Selected as Best Concept) "It's true, Starbuck's says it all. Yuppies rule America, high income housing moved into low income neighborhood." (Selected as Best Concept and Best in Show) "It uses comedy and reality to convey the sense of yuppies urbanization in Chicago. I enjoy the comic protrayal and overall structure." (Selected as Best Concept)" It has a lot more depth. It's deep." Artist's
Statement
Chicago is the city of gentrified neighborhoods. From Lincoln Park to the Pilsen community, yuppies are taking over. Ten years ago, my neighborhood (Wrigley Ville) was nothing compared to how it is now. The families in my neighborhood consisted of little kids that I could play with, now it consists of young upper-class professionals without kids who take families out of their homes so they can build better houses for themselves. We are the last remaining family on our block. This is also happening in a very big community, Cabrini Green. Some research was done and in a book titled: No More Prisons, by William Upski Wimsatt, I found an artwork piece that imitates the sign, “Warning, Target: Rats”, but instead it says, “Warning, Target: Yuppies”, by Micah Bazant. I will place them in certain parts of Cabrini Green so it can be seen and known to the public what horrible things are happening in neighborhoods; leaving lots of families without homes. I took photographs of Cabrini Green. These sites are where I will install the signs. |
